Earth Day Fun 2026
April 22, 2026
Roosevelt Court celebrated Earth Day with a neighbor-powered evening of plants, seeds, mosquito bucket wizardry, and good old-fashioned hell strip cleanup.
The block was already looking gorgeous, with fresh tulips, flowers, compost bags, and well-loved gardens popping up everywhere. A huge thank you to Christine Shuler, who went full neighborhood ninja and single-handedly cleaned the entire North Court before the event. Gently high-five her if you see her.
Melissa Riepe helped put together the evening’s plan, with support from the RCA Gardening Posse. Current posse count: Melissa, Devin, and Clint. New recruits welcome.
This was not a formal event. It was just a thingy. But it turned into exactly the kind of thing Roosevelt Court does well: neighbors showing up, sharing plants, talking gardens, building mosquito buckets, and leaving the block a little cleaner than we found it.
What We Did
Seed and Plant Exchange
Neighbors brought cups for seeds. We didn’t exchange any plants, this time. But perhaps we’ll do it again.
Mosquito Bucket Demo
We assembled three mosquito buckets using buckets, zip ties, chicken wire, drills, dunks, and the appropriate level of neighborhood seriousness. These buckets can help reduce mosquito breeding when maintained properly with mosquito dunks according to the instructions. We have three leftover buckets and enough supplies to make many more.
Block Cleanup
We broke into small groups and tackled the hell strips, sidewalks, alleys, and lingering bits of litter around the block. The RCA brought trash grabbers and heavy-duty bags. Neighbors brought gloves, energy, and the will to finally defeat the ancient Halloween candy wrappers. A new group was formed know as the Trash Hunters and we’re gonna meet every two weeks for a walk around the block together.
Thanks to Everyone Who Helped
Thanks to everyone who came out, shared supplies, helped clean, joined the mosquito bucket crew, or just stopped by to say hello. Tiny acts add up quickly around here.
Roosevelt Court looked beautiful before we started. It looked even better afterward.
